Croeso Choir

Welcome to Croeso, a community choir based in central Swansea. With nearly 50 members, we’re a vibrant mixed voice choir open to all levels of experience.

Whether you’re a seasoned singer or a beginner, you’ll find a supportive and friendly environment here.

We are a natural voice choir which means that we emphasise community, accessibility and the joy of singing.

We have two weekly groups and you can join one or both.

One meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm at Swansea Wellbeing Centre, SA1 5PQ.

The other meets on Thursday evenings from 6.15-7.45pm at Uniting Church Sketty, Dillwyn Rd, SA2 9AH.

Why Join Us

  • Boost Your Wellbeing: Singing reduces stress and improves happiness.
  • Make New Friends: Our members become good friends and often socialise outside of choir.
  • No Auditions: All are welcome, regardless of experience.

What We Sing

We sing a varied repertoire including folk songs from Britain, South Africa and Eastern Europe, and contemporary music written especially for community choirs.

I always try to choose a mix of harmonies, rhythms and styles to give the group a wide range of music to enjoy and hopefully provide something for everyone.

As far as possible, I teach the same repertoire in both groups.

The Venues

On Tuesdays, we meet in the cosy and welcoming Swansea Wellbeing Centre (SA1 5PQ), on the corner of Burman St and Walter Rd in Swansea.

On Thursdays, we meet at Uniting Church Sketty, Dillwyn Rd, SA2 9AH

The choir runs weekly during the school term, with a break for half term.

Frequently Asked Questions about Croeso Choir

Check out our FAQs section below for answers to common queries. If you have any other questions not answered below, please feel free to drop me an email. I’m always happy to provide more information and assist you in any way I can.

When and where do we meet?

We have two weekly groups and you can join one or both.

Our Tuesday group meets weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7 – 9pm to sing, with a break in the middle. Our venue is the cosy and welcoming Swansea Wellbeing Centre, on the corner of Burman St and Walter Rd in Swansea. On-street parking is available nearby.

The Thursday group meets weekly on Thursday evenings from 6.15 – 7.45pm at Uniting Church,  Court, Sketty Park, Swansea, SA2 9AE. This is a new group  with a shorter, earlier session. We’ll aim to cover much the same material as the Tuesday evening Croeso Choir, just in a more compact 90-minute format.

Both groups only meet during term time and don’t meet during half term or over the school holidays.

What kind of music do you sing?

We sing a varied repertoire including folk songs from Britain, South Africa and Eastern Europe, and contemporary music written especially for community choirs.

I always try to choose a mix of harmonies, rhythms and styles to give the group a wide range of music to enjoy and hopefully provide something for everyone.

Recent highlights include:

  • Call in the Spring by Rosie Sleightholme

  • Treasure by Johnny Flynn (The Detectorist theme)

  • Nkosi Sikelel’i Afrika

  • Pokarekare Ana; a popular Maori folksong

  • Snow Falls by John Tams

Do I need to audition?

No, we welcome singers of all levels. No prior experience is needed and we won’t make you audition. Enthusiasm is all you need!

Do I need to be able to read music?

Not at all. We don’t use sheet music, instead all learning is done by ear so that everyone can pick it up easily.

You’ll also get recordings of each session and audio files for each voice part to help you learn the music.

How much does it cost to join?

Membership of Croeso Choir is £27/month per group,  paid via a PayPal subscription or standing order.

Payments are spread evenly across the year, even though choir sessions only take place during term time. This means you’ll keep paying through the holiday breaks, but you’re not paying extra – the cost of the three terms is just spread out over 12 months.

If you join for a single term, you’ll make four monthly payments to cover that term (September to December for the Autumn term, January to April for the Spring term, and May to August for the Summer term).

This approach helps keep admin simple, supports the smooth running of the choirs and means I get paid throughout the year. If you’d rather, you can also choose to pay termly instead.

Your membership includes at least 30 live sessions each year, plus access to rehearsal recordings and learning files on the members’ section of the website.

If you choose to join both the Tuesday and Thursday groups, your membership fees will be £49/month (saving £5/month).

Can I attend a trial session?

Croeso Choir opens for new members at the beginning of each term and we encourage you to become a member and try us out.

We know that joining a new choir can feel intimidating, so we offer free introductory sessions from time to time. To find out about upcoming introductory sessions, please join our mailing list below or drop me an email.

What should I bring to rehearsals?

Just yourself and a love of singing!

Do you perform?

Croeso Choir run a sharing event at the end of each term. These are informal opportunities to socialise and share the music that we’ve been learning, but you do not need to attend these if you do’t want to. Performance is not the central focus of what we’re about – it’s more about coming together for the love of singing.

Who are your members?

We currently have nearly 50 members. The choirs are mixed voice and open to all adults and all levels of experience.

Are you a social choir?

Croeso Choir is more than a choir (or two!). Our members become good friends and often socialise outside of choir. There is evidence to show that singing is a great bonding activity and one of the best ways to connect with people.

Do I need to come every week?

Don’t worry if you can’t make every session. Once you join we give you access to recordings of each session so you can catch up if you want to.

If you’re a member of one Croeso Choir and you can’t make the rehearsal that week, you’re also welcome to attend the other weekly rehearsal instead.

What is a natural voice choir?

Natural voice choirs emphasise inclusivity, accessibility and unaccompanied (a cappella) singing. The Natural Voice Network promotes  singing as a natural and communal human activity, open to everyone regardless of musical experience.

Key characteristics of a natural voice choir include:

  1. Inclusivity: We are open to people of all abilities and backgrounds
  2. Oral learning: We learn everything by ear and don’t use sheet music.
  3. Focus on fun: We emphasise the joy of singing and the sense of community, rather than performance perfection.
  4. Wide repertoire: We draw our songs from many traditions, including folk, world and gospel music.

I've got another question!

Please feel free to drop me an email if you have any other questions not answered above.
